Gustavo House

The Gustavo-Haus in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg , district Fennpfuhl , is a renovated slab high-rise, on the four sides of which a representation with figures by the Spanish artist Gustavo was applied with computer help in 1998/1999 .

location

The 18- or 21-storey double high-rise is on Franz-Jacob-Straße, very close to the Storkower Straße S-Bahn station and Landsberger Allee . With the exception of the Storkower Bogen office and business complex, the surrounding buildings are all significantly lower so that the work of art is clearly visible from three sides.

history

The building is a GDR-type double high-rise and was erected in the early 1980s when the Lichtenberg Nord residential area was being built. In the mid-1990s, when a large number of residential buildings in Lichtenberg were being renovated, the new owner of the high-rise, Privatization Management GmbH Prima , came up with the idea of an unusual look for the building. The head of the company Prima , Klaus-Dieter Heinken, applied to the district administration for approval for an artistically designed facade. Then he got in touch with the Spanish artist Gustavo, whom he had met personally while working at Haus Bethanien in Kreuzberg from 1976 to 1990. He inspired the painter, who lives in Mallorca, for the project of creating a picture in small parts for each side of the house. Gustavo made drawings with simple, brightly colored figures and made a model of the house, which was scanned as a template for the production of the aluminum parts.

In 1998, following a tender , the Prima company placed the order for the facade production with the Pankow company Henke . Each of the picture puzzle pieces were transferred to an aluminum plate using permanent paint, which was then fired. According to the manufacturer, the facade elements treated in this way are protected against corrosion or color changes for at least 30 years. The originally crooked walls of the high-rise building, which was built in 1978, were given an aluminum frame after they were clad with insulating material, with which the wall elements could be visually straightened. The Pankower riveted the 11,000 individual parts of the picture composition onto this frame. To avoid vandalism or other damage, the building is monitored by video and there is a concierge service.

The investor paid a total of 23 million DM for the renovation, including the art campaign  . The house with its 296 apartments is well let. The tenants like the work of art, which was inaugurated on October 6, 1999.
