Gustavus Green

Gustavus Green (born March 11, 1865 in Hounslow , † December 29, 1964 in London ) was a British engineer .

In 1905 Green developed the first water-cooled aircraft engines in England, and in 1913 he founded the Green Engine Company . The Green engines were used by numerous pioneers in British aviation, such as Alliott Verdon Roe , founder of Avro Aircraft Works , and Samuel Franklin Cody .

In 1908 the Green C.4 , a water-cooled four-cylinder aircraft engine, went into series production, followed in 1911 by the Green E.6 , another water-cooled six-cylinder engine. In 1912 Green received the Patrick Young Alexander Prize. Its later engines were used in torpedo boats during World War I. After World War II, Green helped develop the concept of flexible decks for light aircraft carriers . His ideas for such a deck were confirmed by the successful landing of a De Havilland Sea Vampire , flown by Eric Melrose Brown , on the experimental Green rubber deck on the HMS Warrior , a light aircraft carrier for the Colossus -Class that was installed.

Gustavus Green became an honorary member of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1958 . He died in December 1964 at his home in Twickenham, London .
