Gustavus Richard Brown (born October 17, 1747 , † September 30, 1804 ) was a lifelong friend of George Washington , a doctor who was involved in the establishment of hospitals for the Continental Army and a botanist. He was best known for being one of the doctors called to Washington the night he died.

Life

Gustavus Brown studied medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland, and graduated in 1768. In addition to his medical profession, he was elected to the Maryland Parliament and served as a judge. He was a member of the Maryland State Convention of 1788 and voted to ratify the US Constitution. During the American Revolution he helped establish military hospitals and became a general doctor of the Continental Army. He asked General Washington to inspect the troops in Maryland and register the men fit for duty. Around 1780, he bought four tracts of land from his neighbor and amalgamated them, they became known as "Betty's Delight". On this amalgamation of land he built his Rose Hill country estate, where he moved in 1783. Rose Hill is adjacent to the Thomas Stone National Historic Site .

Together with Dr. James Craik, "Dr. Gustav R. Brown, another prominent Port Tobacco resident and Dr. Elisha Cullen Dick, visited [George] Washington during his last illness on December 14, 1799. Dr. James Craik was so impressed with the medical Dr. Brown's competence that he, Mrs. Washington (Martha) suggested that she should send to Dr. Brown in an emergency. " "Dr. Gustavus R. Brown, another prominent resident of Port Tobacco, and Dr. Elisha Cullen Dick, attended [George] Washington during his final illness, December 14, 1799. Dr. James Craik was so impressed with Dr. Brown's medical skills that he suggested to Mrs. Washington (Martha), that if any case should occur that was seriously alarming, she should send for Dr. Brown. "

The Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary in Waldorf , Maryland is named after him. His younger sister, Margaret, married Thomas Stone , one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence . In some records, Dr. Brown to be confused with his father of the same name, he was born in Dalkeith , Scotland in 1708. The elder Gustav Brown settled in Middleton (named for his family near Homestead Dalkeith, Scotland) in Charles County , Maryland.
