The Gutenberg-Gymnasium (officially: 3rd State Gymnasium " Johann Gutenberg ") is a Gymnasium in Erfurt .

history

In 1906 the city of Erfurt commissioned the construction of a school building with a gym, sports field and two toilet blocks. The construction cost was 580,000 Reichsmarks. On April 23, 1909, the school was inaugurated and named after the inventor of the printing press, the Gutenberg School .

During the First World War, the school building became an epidemic hospital. From 1919 onwards, some classes were taught again, but full school operation did not begin until the school year 1923/24. During the Second World War, from autumn 1939 to summer 1945, the school building was again used as a hospital.

In 1947 the Erfurt Institute for Teacher Training was added to the building, but it moved out again in 1960. Since 1959 the school was named Polytechnische Oberschule  7 "Johann Gutenberg" .

After the reunification, the conversion to the 3rd state high school "Johann Gutenberg" took place, which began teaching on September 2, 1991.

During the rampage in Erfurt on the morning of April 26, 2002, a former student shot 16 people (including eleven teachers, a trainee lawyer, a secretary, two students and a police officer) and then himself on the school grounds.

Only more than three years later, after extensive reconstruction and renovation work on the building, was the school officially resumed in the rooms of the grammar school on August 29, 2005 with a ceremony. A staircase to the entrance gate has greatly changed the exterior of the building.
