The Edith Stein School in Erfurt is one of two schools in Erfurt that are church-sponsored.

History of the girls' school

Ursuline girls' school, Goetheschule, POS 21

Until 1939 there was a girls' school of the Ursuline convent on the site of the current school building. In 1939 the school was closed by the National Socialists and re-established as the Goethe School, which existed as a state school until the 1990s. During the time of the GDR , the Goetheschule was equipped with two classes (from the third) of a year with extended Russian lessons. It was not until 1974 that the student body was split up, with one part remaining in what was then called " POS 21 " and the other part moved to a newly built school in Rieth, the " POS 42 " (later the "Lenin School" ). In the following years, the class trains with extended Russian lessons, i.e. from the third grade, were no longer set up.

New establishment of a grammar school with a regular school branch run by a Catholic institution

After the fall of the Wall, the desire arose in Erfurt to re-establish the former Ursuline School. It was to be named after Edith Stein , a philosopher and Catholic nun of Jewish origin. In October 1991 the Erfurt school development association was founded for the Edith Stein School in Erfurt. In December 1991 a school development association was founded in Würzburg and in the following year 1992 the school development association in Essen , which also supports the Edith Stein School.

On August 23, 1992 the Edith-Stein-Gymnasium was inaugurated with the associated mainstream school. Under the sponsorship of the Episcopal Office Erfurt-Meiningen (later the Diocese of Erfurt ), the newly founded school accepted 147 students in grades 5 and 6. 14 teachers and six employees were hired. Since then, three high school classes and one regular school class have been added almost every year. In June 1996 the first secondary school students left the Edith Stein School. The first secondary school leavers left school in July 1997 . From the 2013/2014 school year, Sven Voigt took over the management of the retired founding director Siegfried Schnauß.

Extension

With the increase in the number of students, the school complex also grew into two connected parts of the building, which include a schoolyard. In October 1994 the groundbreaking ceremony and the start of construction work for an extension to the school took place. The construction was planned and executed by the architecture office Kellner Kraus Stark from Darmstadt. The new building, completed in 1996, offers specialist rooms for biology , chemistry , physics and music lessons . In the meantime, the old art rooms in the new building have been converted into the new library and tea room. A gym is located under the new building to save space. This can be divided into two parts by a curtain so that two classes can have lessons at the same time. Sports festivals take place on external sports fields or gyms, as the school in the densely built-up center of Erfurt does not have its own sports field.

State recognition

The private Edith Stein School in Erfurt has been officially recognized by the Free State of Thuringia since May / July 1998 , and the first high school graduates were released a year later . On August 24, 2002, the Edith Stein School in Erfurt celebrated its tenth anniversary. In October 2012, the 20th anniversary was celebrated with several events.

School profile

Christian core values, requirements

Under the sponsorship of the diocese of Erfurt , the teaching should convey Christian values. In addition to morning prayer and monthly church services for all students, there are leisure activities such as morning reflection, midday prayers and numerous working groups. The school is located on the property of the nearby Ursuline monastery with which it works. Since there are significantly more applicants than places for the new 5th grade every year, an admissions interview takes place before the regular registration for grammar schools. Every interested pupil and his or her parents have a conversation with the school management, during which the motivation and suitability of the child for the school profile are checked. Siblings are given priority. Religious affiliation is not necessary, but willingness to participate in the religious life of the school. In principle, the same requirements apply to admission to higher classes. The school charges a tuition fee that, depending on the income of the parents and the number of siblings at the school, was between € 0 and € 70 per month in the 2011/12 school year (up to € 90 from 2012/13).

Subject offers

In the subject of religion, in addition to Catholic and Protestant religion, a basic course is offered in the 5th and 6th grades after you have to decide whether to choose Protestant or Catholic religion . A Protestant or a Catholic religion teacher (usually Auxiliary Bishop Reinhard Hauke ) teaches for one semester . Religious instruction is compulsory for all classes. There is no ethics class .

The students of the grammar school classes normally have English as their first foreign language . As a second foreign language, Latin and French can be chosen from the 6th grade onwards. From year 9 onwards you can choose between a scientific and a linguistic profile (third foreign language Latin, French, possibly Russian )

In the upper level, the subject “Presentation and Design” (DuG) is offered, which conveys a practical and theoretical examination of drama and theater.

In the mainstream school part, only French is offered as a second foreign language . Works are offered in the 5th and 6th grades . In the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, the pupils each take part in an internship.

Since 1997, the students in the 10th grade have been taking part in a 14-day social internship instead of the usual professional internship .

Working groups

In addition, the school offers a variety of working groups (AGs for short) in the afternoons, in which the students can pursue their interests and hobbies.
