Edith Stein School

The Edith Stein School ( ESS for short ) was founded in Darmstadt in 1854 as a Catholic secondary school for girls . From 1870 the school was run by the English Misses . In 1938 the National Socialist government forced the school to close.

It was re-established after the Second World War on the initiative of the pastor of the Liebfrauen parish , Philipp Waldhelm, in the parish. The school was initially run by Ursulines , from whom their name at the time, Ursuline School, was derived. Since 1960, after the Ursulines left the school, the school has been called the Edith Stein School . The school has been run by the Edith Stein School in Darmstadt since 1978, and the original girls' school has been co-educational since 1986 .

The Edith Stein School is a state-recognized, privately owned grammar school, it is a Catholic private school of the diocese of Mainz . This means that the students can achieve a state-recognized school leaving certificate, the Abitur. The school is attended by approximately 1,100 students from Darmstadt, the Darmstadt-Dieburg district and communities in neighboring districts.

The school is divided into two building complexes. The old building ( Pfarrer-Waldhelm-Haus ), in which the fifth and sixth grades are taught, as well as the new building, which, in addition to grades seven to 12, also houses the two sports halls and the specialist halls for the areas of music , art , biology , chemistry , IT and Physics houses. The Edith Stein School also has the oldest school medical service in Darmstadt, founded in 1998. The Edith Stein School also publishes a school newspaper called SteinprESSe . It is named after the surname of the school's namesake and the abbreviation of the school name. The approximately 24-page edition has been published quarterly before the holidays for around 25 years.

From the 5th grade onwards, students learn English as their first foreign language . Latin or French are offered as second foreign languages . As an optional third language can be Spanish or Latin or French choose according to the second foreign language.
