Krautkopfbrunnen

Origin and history

At the southern end of the square in front of the Gutenberg School, the city administration of Karlsruhe had a fountain built, the plans of which were drawn up by the architect and artist Friedrich Ratzel in 1905. But because Ratzel had committed suicide in 1908, the architect H. Balmer and the sculptor E. Mezger completed the work. So the fountain could be inaugurated in 1908, its production including operating costs were estimated at around 67,000  marks . In 1940 the herb head and the metal ribs were dismantled and melted down as a metal donation by the German people for the manufacture of war equipment. In 1946 the fountain was initially put back into operation without the metal decorations. Between 1960 and August 1962, the bronze parts were reconstructed from copper. In 1961 a circulation pump was installed, the lower well basin was filled in and planted, and the enclosure removed.

description

Detail of the Krautkopfbrunnen, Gutenbergplatz Karlsruhe

The octagonal granite fountain basin incorporated into the square covered a floor area of 210 square meters; it was surrounded and protected by a low, simple railing with concrete posts. Large stone balls and a pelican carved out of stone were leaning against the basin on a simple pedestal. The pelican served as a drinking fountain . In the lower basin, water flowed from the upper part of the facility and which the planners called a running fountain . Inside was a central, round water basin with a wave-shaped edge and a diameter of 8.40 m, mounted on shell limestone . On the edge of the pool are flat masks with the representation of all kinds of aquatic animals such as frogs or fish that spew water into the pool. Centered again is the upper basin, with a diameter of 2.40 m. Dancing fruits, flower garlands and nine putti are mounted on the edge of the fountain, telling little everyday stories. Together with a frame made of bronze clasps entwined with flowers, they form an open semicircular roof over the top fountain bowl. This dome-like structure is completed by an oversized cabbage head . The entire construction was 5.60 meters high. Water flows from the leaves of the herbaceous head and looks for its way over the edge of the pool or drains incorporated in the pool.

Separation of a part as a pelican fountain

In the 21st century, after the lower basin was filled in in 1960, only the basin just above the height of the square (former middle basin) with a wide rim can be seen, which gave the fountain its originally planned dimensions and the size of the square Completely takes design. "[...] the appearance of the fountain system suffered considerably, and the overall effect planned by Friedrich Ratzel was severely disturbed."

The pelican therefore stands as its own drinking fountain next to the remains of the earlier complex, without any connection to the entire earlier fountain system. But drinking water still flows out of it .

market

The market on Gutenbergplatz is the city's oldest market. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. is market day. Over 40 retailers offer a wide range of goods, including baked goods and pasta, regional vegetables and fruit, meat and fish, dairy products and specialties from the nearby regions of Palatinate and Alsace, among others. On Saturdays in particular, the offer is very wide and the demand is significantly stronger than during the week.

Festivals

Every year on the first weekend in July, the citizens' association of Weststadt organizes the Linden Blossom Festival on Gutenbergplatz. It is the oldest traditional festival in Karlsruhe and took place for the 96th time in 2014. The name of the festival is derived from the linden trees that bloom on the square at this time of year. The festival includes performances by the historical vigilante Karlsruhe eV, live music, amusement stands for children and programs for senior citizens. In addition, a lime blossom queen and princesses will be chosen.

On the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the Krautkopfbrunnen, the first Krautkopffest took place on October 20, 2007 .
