The Gutenkapelle is a chapel built in the 20th century in Schönwald in the Black Forest .

History of origin

The builder Engelbert Hummel (born October 15, 1903; † May 31, 1978), brother of the court owner Otto Hummel senior, made a vow to build a chapel before the Second World War if his family and his home village were spared the war .

Engelbert Hummel was a tailor by trade , so everyone who helped him with the construction or donated material received a suit in return. So the chapel could be built very cheaply. His nephew Otto Hummel (born April 22, 1934) actively supported him. After a short construction period, the Gutenkapelle was consecrated on August 15, 1954 for the Assumption of Mary.

Design

The Grüninger bell foundry from Villingen cast the bell from white bronze as early as 1950 , with the inscription “HL. WENDELIN PLEASE FOR US ”, which was paid for by the nieces and nephews. It has an unusually deep sound for bands. The bell was originally supposed to find its place in the courtyard, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1926. Engelbert Hummel then kept his promise four years later and built a chapel above the courtyard. The Madonna and the Way of the Cross were carved by Mr. Rieber from Furtwangen , the altar and door are from the Thoma joinery in Rohrbach.

Recent history and usage

In 1995 and 1996 the interior of the chapel was renovated by Otto and his son Klaus. In 1998 the bell was also electrified and has been ringing at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. In 2004 the chapel was given a new paint job, this time the fourth generation was already actively helping.

Weddings and baptisms took place in the chapel . Once a year, on Assumption Day (August 15), there is a mass .
