Gutenprint (formerly Gimp-Print ) is a collection of free printer drivers . The name of the project was changed because the name “Gimp” suggested that these printer drivers only work with GIMP .

Functions

The drivers for Canon , Brother , Epson , Kyocera , Lexmark , Sony , Olympus and PCL - printers come in CUPS , Foomatic and Gimp used. The focus of use is therefore on free operating systems such as Linux . Gutenprint is also used in other Unix-based systems such as macOS . Over 700 different printers are supported.

history

The Gimp-Print drivers were actually the printer drivers for the GIMP graphics program and were written by Michael Sweet in 1999.

The first version that was published on the Internet development platform SourceForge was numbered 3.1. Version 4.0 was published in November 2000.

Version 4.2 was released in November 2001, CUPS was supported here. After Apple's macOS came out, it turned out that many printer manufacturers no longer updated their drivers for older printers, whereupon Gimp-Print became the only way for many users to keep their old printer running. However, with the ever increasing number of features of new printers, it soon became clear that a bigger step would be necessary for a new version. The jump to version number 5 should make it clear that many new functions had been added. In addition, a decision was made to change the name in autumn 2004, since the project now had almost nothing to do with the GIMP. The new name "Gutenprint" is based on the inventor of book printing Johannes Gutenberg .

Version 5.0 was released on July 30, 2006 after four years of development. As originally planned, this did not contain real color management .
