Gwabegar ( ˈwɒbɨɡər / WOB -i-gər) is a city in northwestern New South Wales , Australia. The city is located in the local administrative area of Narrabri Shire , 625 kilometers northwest of the state capital Sydney . At the 2016 census, Gwabegar had a population of 162.
The city is located in the center of the largest naturally grown cypress forest ( callitris ) in the southern hemisphere, the Pilliga State Forest. With twelve sawmills, the timber industry was once the mainstay of the city's economy, after which agriculture remained the main source of income.
The Goonanyah Post Office opened on August 15, 1912 and was renamed Gwabegar in 1924.
Gwabegar is the historic terminus of the Gwabegar railway line , which now only leads to Binnaway . The now closed station opened in 1923. The former next station in the direction of Wallerawang was Merebene .
