Church and monastery

The Anglican church in the town center is dedicated to Saint Winefrid ( Welsh : Gwenffrewi) and dates from 1869. However, it is assumed that the church goes back to a previous building, which was donated by Prince Eleri around 600 AD . He had founded a double monastery on the site. He served as abbot while his cousin's daughter, St. Gwenffrewi, was abbess. The church is an important stop on the North Welsh Pilgrimage Route. In the churchyard there are three yew trees and a row of four menhirs .

In the literature

Gwytherin is the setting for the crime novel A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters (1977). The novel is the first of a series of 21 novels about the monk Brother Cadfael and the monks of Shrewsbury Abbey in the 12th century. Cadfael corresponds to the historical Robert of Shrewsbury (Robert Pennant, † 1168).
