Gymnocalycium baldianum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet baldianum honors J. Baldi, an acquaintance and supporter of Carlos Luis Spegazzini .

description

Gymnocalycium baldianum initially grows individually and later forms groups with gray-green to blue-green, depressed spherical shoots and reaches heights of 4 to 10 centimeters with a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters. A bulbous turnip and a taproot are formed. The nine to eleven rounded ribs are humped. Central spines are absent. The five to seven gray or brown radial spines are thin, lie on the shoot surface and are up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The pink to deep red or purple flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The dark gray-green fruits are spindle-shaped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium baldianum is widespread in the Argentine province of Catamarca at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus baldianus in 1905 by Carlos Luis Spegazzini . In 1925 he placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
