Gyula Kovács , also known as Julius Kovács , (born December 27, 1929 in Budapest ; † February 13, 1992 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian drummer who was one of the pioneers of Hungarian jazz .

Live and act

Kovács studied at the National Conservatory of Budapest. From 1951 to 1961 he was a member of the Martíny Band ; The first recordings were made in 1956 with the singer Myrna Bell (alias Irma Hoso). He then worked with the bands of Andor Kovács and Aladár Pege , with Mihály Tabányi , Csaba Deseő , János Kőrössy , Laszlo Turan , György Gallus , Csaba Deseő and others. He performed at the 4th Yugoslav Jazz Festival in Bled in 1963, at the Prague Jazz Festival in 1964, at the Jazz Festival in Bilzen in 1969 and in Berlin in 1970.

Kovács taught drums at the jazz faculty of the Béla Bartók Conservatory. Since the 1980s he has led his own quartet, Mr. Dob . He made recordings for several records in the Modern Jazz Anthology Qualiton series (No. IV – VIII). In 1976 he recorded the album Samen Enek with the Janos Gonda Sextet . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 29 recording sessions between 1956 and 1980, most recently with the Deak Big Band ( Azok A Huszas Evek ).
