Hágöngur (Sprengisandur)

The Hágöngur are mountains near Tungnafellsjökull in Sprengisandur in the highlands of Iceland . The highest peaks are Nyrðri- and Syðri-Háganga .

geography

There are several mountains located about 25 km south of Nýidalur and southwest of Vonarskarð and Tungnafellsjökull . At the same time, they are located about 40 km northeast of the Þórisvatn reservoir . With them is a high temperature area that is counted as part of the volcanic system of Tungnafellsjökull and is partly under the Hágöngulón reservoir .

In the area there is a central volcano with a diameter of 10 km. The rhyolite mountains , which stand in a semicircle, suggest a caldera here . Three high-temperature areas belong to this volcano, two of which are now under the Hágöngulón reservoir . The third is in the west in the Sveðjuhraun lava field .

The Landsvirkjun company has started investigations into the use of geothermal energy here. a. by means of a test borehole.
