As hemoperitoneum (male, from Greek αίμα , "blood" and ασκός , "hose") or as Hämatoperitoneum or hemoperitoneum is a bleeding into the free abdominal cavity , respectively. It is potentially life threatening. Bleeding into the peritoneal space is possible after injuries and operations, as a result of spontaneous rupture of an aortic aneurysm , a hemangioma of the liver or fallopian tube, or with a general tendency to bleed ( hemorrhagic diathesis ). In addition to severe pain in the abdomen due to the peritoneal irritation, signs of shock and blood loss (paleness, weakness, poor general condition ) are quickly recorded. The auscultation of the abdomen shows a weakening of bowel sounds , in lean people, an increase in waist circumference can be observed. In addition to a drop in the number of erythrocytes and hematocrit, the blood count almost always shows leukocytosis . The treatment consists primarily of the surgical suction of the blood and supply of the respective bleeding source. At the same time, the blood circulation must be stabilized by volume substitution and, if necessary, by blood transfusion .

In a broader sense, bloody ascites is sometimes referred to as hemaskos.
