It was founded in Forst in 1908 . At first, the company concentrated on interlining fabrics for clothing and was therefore at times one of the market leaders in Germany. Oswald Hensel developed a process to twist horsehair into a thread suitable for weaving. Bruno Henschke founded the company "Hänsel & Co" in 1908 for commercial exploitation. The product known as Hansel horsehair was used in particular as an interlining material for ready-made goods. In 1909 the company only had 26 employees. As early as 1911, it was producing 1.2 million meters of textiles. In the same year, a fire destroyed the production facilities. The factory was rebuilt and produced 1.8 million meters of fabric in 1913.

After the First World War, a company newspaper with the title Hänsel-Echo was published for sales purposes. An edition of 120,000 copies was distributed to Schneider for advertising purposes. In 1939, the Hänselwerke were one of the largest producers of thread and hair interlining material in the German Reich . Production covered about half of the total demand. During this time they employed over 2000 workers. After the war, the company suffered from dismantling and expropriations. In 1948 the "Hänselwerk Association of Nationally Owned Enterprises" was founded. However, the products did not achieve great importance in the emerging GDR .

Bruno Henschke had already gone to Hamburg in 1945 and tried to rebuild operations in the western zones. He finally found a production site in Iserlohn . Only in existing factories and from 1948 in a new building, since 1949 with another company in Kirn, the Hänsel company started operations again. The Hansel echo was also sent again after the war. In 1949, Hansel had 150 employees. Many of them were refugees from the former East German areas and the GDR . In 1963 a plant was added in Austria. In 1962, eight million meters of textiles were produced. Technically, the procedures were further developed.

As a result of changed market conditions, the workforce was greatly reduced to 121 in 1971. The traditional hair yarn spinning mill was given up in favor of other textile products. The production hall in Iserlohn was destroyed in 1986 by masses of snow on the roof, but was later rebuilt. In 1991 the company was transferred to the financial holding Kufner Group. 180 employees currently work at the headquarters in Iserlohn. There are 250 in total. The company has 60 subsidiaries and partner companies in Europe , Asia and South America .

On 2 October 2009 which had Amtsgericht Hagen an insolvency proceedings placed on the company's assets and a provisional liquidator appointed. The bankruptcy procedure was opened on December 31, 2009 and canceled on February 28, 2011.

On July 25, 2014 it became known that the Iserlohn company was facing a restructuring, as part of which the fabric production in Iserlohn was to be sold. As of December 31, 2015, the company will cease operations. The factory buildings in Iserlohn have been demolished since mid-2019.
