Hóp (Iceland)
The Hóp is a lagoon in the north of Iceland near Blönduós on Húnafjörður .
Geography and history
The lagoon lies in the municipal area of Húnaþing vestra and Húnavatn , with the larger (eastern) part belonging to Húnavatn. The area of the lagoon varies with the tides between 29 and 44 square kilometers. The depth is up to 9 meters. The fish-rich river Víðidalsá flows into the Hóp. The lagoon is separated from the Húnaflói Bay by a headland called mitingrarsandur.
History and sights
The Þingeyrakirkja church is located on the Þingeyrarsandur . In 1133 the first monastery in the country was founded here.
The Borgarvirki fortress and the Vatnsdalshólar hills are located near the Hóp lagoon .
