Geographical location
The Hôtel de Sade is located in the historic center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on the spot where the Roman thermal baths of the ancient predecessor settlement of today's city were.
history
In the Middle Ages , the aristocratic de Sade family from Avignon built a city palace in Saint-Rémy. The ruins of the Roman thermal baths, which at that time were still largely upright, were partially incorporated into the building. It was rebuilt several times in the following centuries, so that today there are parts of the building from the Gothic and Renaissance in addition to the Roman ones . The majority of the complex dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is about 2000 m².
The building has been a listed building since 1926 . In 1941 the state bought the building. After searching for an exhibition location for the numerous finds from archaeological excavations in neighboring Glanum and other archaeological finds from the city and region, the building was chosen.
Archaeological Museum
From 1968 the archaeological museum was opened in sections. In 2004 it had to be closed due to damage to the building. It was only partially reopened in 2015 after renovation, and it has only been fully accessible again since summer 2018. Since the building went into state ownership, the Roman-era parts of the complex have increasingly been prepared from the later overbuildings and can now be viewed as part of the exhibition.
Important exhibits in the collection are:
- Seated statues from Glanum with still preserved, colored painting, depicting men with aristocratic , Celtic outfits.
- Also from Glanum: Several column capitals with figurative representations - very rare in antiquity - that also show Celtic nobles or gods.
