Högvålen is at 835 m above sea level the highest village in Sweden where agriculture is practiced. It is located in the province of Jämtlands län in the Skanden , in the municipality of Härjedalen , which is largely covered by the historical Swedish province of the same name . The village is classified as an imperial interest .

The village emerged at the end of the 18th century. Thanks to extensive drainage of bog areas and increasingly important forestry , the place grew strongly at the beginning of the 20th century. In its heyday the village consisted of about 50 farms and had about 140 inhabitants. There was also a school, telephone and post office as well as a shop here, especially since there has been a road to Högvålen since around 1920. Due to the height, however, growing grain is impossible, so sheep and goats were kept on the farms . In connection with new laws on grazing land for reindeer , the Swedish state bought all private land in Högvålen in the 1980s to make grazing land for reindeer. Most of the ten or so farms that still exist today are inhabited all year round, but there is almost no agriculture left. More than half of Högvålen's residents are over 80 years old.

The place is repeatedly cut off from the outside world due to disturbances in the telephone connections . The last time there was a bigger problem was in 2006, when the residents of Högvålen were without a phone for several days. The landline connections were disrupted, and cellular networks do not extend to Högvålen.
