Height compensator
In geodesy
As Höhenkompensator or Höhenindexkompensator is in theodolite or other surveying an instrument inclination sensor indicated that the zero point of the vertical circle accurately in the perpendicular direction is (or in the horizontal). This eliminates the influence of the standing axis error on the measured elevation angle .
With older theodolites this had to be done by importing the height index vial ( insurance vial ).
The compensation can be done in two ways:
- with a freely oscillating pendulum body , which is connected to a glass prism placed in the beam path. This adjusts itself exactly horizontally and through reflection the light beam of the height circle reading also becomes horizontal or vertical. This construction principle was first implemented in the 1970s with the Wild T2 or the compensator of automatic leveling devices;
- or through the reflective surface of an oily liquid, such as the theodolite core DKM2-A . Here the reading beam is not reflected, but refracted on the surface of the liquid .
While pendulum bodies only work in one direction, a 2D liquid level can act, i.e. control the leveling in both directions.

In vehicle technology
In vehicle technology , a height compensator is a control unit with which the fuel supply or injection is adapted to the prevailing air pressure . This makes sense from an altitude of around 2000 meters and is built into some Land Cruisers .
In conveyor technology
In excavators and cranes , this is the name given to a control with which the vertical fine movement of the gripper arms can be controlled. Height compensations against the vertical movement of the ships have also been developed
for modern ship cranes , particularly on heavy-lift carriers .
