The cave of Remouchamps ( French Les Grottes de Remouchamps ) is one of the most famous show caves in Belgium , located in the province of Liege . It is located in the district of Remouchamps in the municipality of Aywaille . The cave has been open to the public since 1828.
The temperature in the cave is constant between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius all year round.
The cave consists of several passages and galleries. The most important is the cave called "The Cathedral" with a height of 40 meters, which is separated by a 15 meter thick layer of rock below the Liège – Bastogne motorway.
An underground river, which is called the “Rubicon” after the Roman border river, is fed by the calcareous rainwater. The rainwater takes about one to two hours to get through the limestone layer into the cave. The flow is regulated by a lock. Its water flows into the Amel River , a tributary of the Ourthe , a tributary of the Meuse.
Visitors to the cave are brought back to the entrance by boat across the natural river. Only 80 meters of the over 1000 meters long watercourse were blasted into the rock with dynamite in 1912.
