The caves of Tendal ( Las cuevas de El Tendal ) in Barranco San Juan , the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces on the Canary Island of La Palma form one of the most important prehistoric sites of the indigenous people of La Palma, the Benahoaritas .

On both sides of the Barranco there were at least 27 cave dwellings and two collective grave caves ( necropolis ). The main cave is about 56 meters wide, 11 meters deep and divided into three levels. There were several hut villages in the vicinity of the cave.

To open up the prehistoric sites in El Tendal, five excavation campaigns were carried out from 1981 to 1988, during which more than 2,000 year old objects (ceramic parts) were discovered, which provide information about the living conditions, working methods and cultural aspects of the Benahoaritas.

The El Tendal information center was built on the south side of the Barranco . In addition to the Belmaco Cave in Mazo and the Zarza Cultural Park in Garafía , the Tendal Caves are the third important pre-Hispanic site in La Palma.

The "Zona arqueológica de la Cueva de El Tendal" is under protection as a Bien de Interés Cultural .
