Location and history

The Höllentalaussicht is located to the southeast on the right at the head of the Großer Höllental , a side valley of the Höllental of the Schwarza between Schneeberg and Raxstock above Reichenau an der Rax , at 1610  m above sea level. A. .

History and approach

Insurance of the lookout point with the marking of the Alpine Club Trail
Hedwig Kronich memorial plaque

It was built in 1910 on a rocky outcrop at the demolition of the Rax plateau by the German and Austrian Alpine Club and the innkeeper of the Otto refuge , the "Rax King" Camillo Kronich (1876-1958).

Kronich also initiated the Alpine Club Trail , which leads up from the Höllental. This original approach is now insured as a via ferrata . When the Raxseilbahn in Hirschwang , the first tourist cable car in Austria, opened in 1926 , the Höllentalaussicht became a popular destination for strollers; it is from the Raxalpen mountain inn , the cable car summit station ( 1547  m above sea level ) via the Ottohaus ( 1644  m above sea level ) ü. A. ) and the "Praterstern" easily accessible. In addition, you can easily get to the lookout point from the Wolfgang-Dirnbacher Hut  ( 1477  m above sea level ) below. The way to this hut along the Große Höllental is somewhat exposed because of the Schönbrunner staircase at the entrance to the valley, an easy ascent is via the Großer Kesselgraben and the Gloggnitzer hut  ( 1550  m above sea level ).

There is a plaque of honor for Hedwig Kronich († 1945), the wife of Camillo Kronich, right next to the Höllentalaussicht. It was donated by the Raxgmoa Alpine Society .

geology

The area around Höllentalaussicht - Wachthüttelkamm is likely to represent a zone of younger, middle to upper triadic reef limestone in the Rax plateau- Wetterstein (approx. 230 million years old). The Große Höllental itself is a powerful disturbance (leaf shift) in the limestone of the Rax, which continues across the street on the Schneeberg, and as a "main drainage" also causes the powerful Höllental springs at the end of the valley.
