Wattenscheid crater

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a hole or crater Wattenscheid or of Höntrop early January 2000, two were funnel-shaped, 15-meter-deep sinkholes in a residential area in the Bochum district Wattenscheid - Höntrop known. The event was one of the largest of its kind in the history of the Ruhr area and was considered particularly spectacular. Serious personal injuries were not to be complained about.

Shaft 4, before 1906.

This was caused by the 1905 decommissioned trolley "Shaft 4" of the colliery Maria Anna stone bench in Höntrop . The Bochumer Verein sold the mine to Hugo Stinnes , General Director of the German-Luxembourgish Mining and Hütten-AG , who immediately closed it. When the daytime facilities were demolished, the pyramid trestle overturned because it was very top-heavy due to the weight of the hoisting machine, and fell headfirst into the shaft, where it wedged itself at a depth of 40 meters. The upper part of the 431 m deep shaft was filled with further rubble.

In the following time residential developments were built here. In 1991 the shaft had already been secured with concrete injections. During measurements at a depth of 35 m it was already established in November 1999 that there were displacements of up to 4 m in the mountain.

On January 2, 2000, the turning area of the Emilstrasse cul-de-sac collapsed into the shaft below. The crater had a size of 500 m² and a depth of around 15 m. He took three garages and several cars with him. A similarly large second crater broke open. The S-Bahn traffic between Bochum and Essen had to be interrupted. 7,500 m³ of concrete were required for backfilling. It cost around 12 million DM . Veba is responsible as the legal successor .

In the opinion of the experts, the event was one of the largest day breaks in the history of the Ruhr area and has since been quoted many times in specialist articles about mountain damage . Shortly afterwards, an exploratory program was started with state funds.
