Location, purpose and function

Location and purpose

The Hörmann Forum in Steinhagen, in front of it the sculpture "The Great Knee" by Stephan Balkenhol.

Opposite the headquarters, the personally liable partner Thomas J. Hörmann of the German manufacturer of gates, doors, frames and operators opened the Hörmann Forum with 150 guests on September 25, 2015. After two years of construction in cooperation with the Bielefeld architecture firm Wannenmacher + Möller, the company's largest product exhibition, as well as training and seminar rooms for further training and information for customers and employees, was inaugurated on over 6000 m 2 .

function

With the construction of the Hörmann Forum, the company responded to the increasing demand for product-related training opportunities. The company's goal is to provide employees and customers with a technical understanding of the product portfolio and to ensure successful marketing and assembly. On a separate exhibition area for dealers over 180 m 2 , the Hörmann Forum offers incentives for the creative design and furnishing of sales rooms.

The Hörmann Forum is supported by the online-based learning platform of the Hörmann Academy, in which employees and customers have access to the seminar and training program as well as to e-learning and videos.

architecture

The three-storey elongated structure including visitor parking lot was built on the former employee parking lot opposite the company's headquarters. The transparent building with a sand-blasted light concrete surface, which is reminiscent of the main building of the company's headquarters, is accessible via the municipal road as well as the parking lot and has a cathedral-like foyer. From the partly two-storey ground floor, where, among other things, large industrial doors are exhibited, the stairwell, which is equipped with an elevator, leads to the exhibition area on the first floor. On the second floor there is a further exhibition area and the training rooms as well as a lounge with catering for the guests.

The big one kneeling

The big kneeling figure is a 5.70 m high and almost 3 t heavy bronze sculpture by the sculptor Stephan Balkenhol , which was unveiled with the opening of the Hörmann Forum on September 25, 2015. The sculpture depicts a kneeling man with an upright posture and was originally a competition entry for the Freedom and Unity Monument 2010 in Berlin.

The sculpture made of plaster and cast in bronze by the sculptor who teaches at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe is reminiscent of Willy Brandt's kneeling in Warsaw and is therefore intended to reflect an idea of freedom.

In addition, the large kneeling figure offers scope for interpretation. Through the kneeling gesture with an upright posture and a purposeful gaze, both pride and humility can be read. The director of the Berliner Festspiele explains in his text “Recent beings” about the gesture of kneeling in Stephan Balkenhol's work that there are few gestures of the human body that are permeated with as much ambivalence as those of kneeling. With his sculpture, Balkenhol also illustrates the course of life: behind the figure lies the past, in front of it the future and it responsibly faces the here and now. Notches, cracks and irregularities reflect the work process and make the sculpture with the colored version come to life. To ensure that the viewer identifies with the sculpture, Balkenhol deliberately dispenses with specific features and strong emotions.

Others

The opening of the Hörmann Forum was attended by the company management and employees as well as the Steinhagener Mayor Klaus Besser , the architect Andreas Wannenmacher and the sculptor Stephan Balkenhol , whose sculpture “The Big Knee” adorns the forecourt of the Hörmann Forum.

In 2019 the Hörmann Forum celebrated its 50,000 visitor anniversary.
