Detail of the Hülsbachtal bridge: connection of a pendulum support to the Gerber girders

The 257.2 meter long Hülsbachtal bridge is a railway bridge over the Hülsbach in Westerburg and the second longest pendulum pillar bridge in Germany. The railway line over the steel girder viaduct connected Westerburg and Rennerod until 1998 . Today the route is closed.

Construction and history

The Hülsbachtal bridge was built as a pendulum pillar bridge by Tillmann'sche Eisenbau AG for the Herborn – Montabaur railway line , also known as the Westerwald-Querbahn . The viaduct is a girder bridge with tanner girders . Tanner girders were mainly used for large steel trussed railway bridges, which could not be designed as suspension bridges due to their span and the higher loads of the trains compared to road traffic.

The 600-ton, riveted steel bridge rests on two abutments at the ends of the bridge and on four steel pendulum supports over its entire length . In December 1906, construction work on the bridge was completed. The cost was around 350,000 marks.

Pedestrian walkways are installed on both sides of the bridge. From 1920 to 1922, the steel structure was reinforced due to the increasingly higher loads from rail vehicles . In the 1930s the riveted joints were renewed due to signs of fatigue. The bridge received its last coat of paint at the end of the 1960s.

The section of the Westerwald-Querbahn crossing the bridge from Westerburg to Rennerod was put into operation on July 16, 1907 and shut down on April 25, 1998.

The Hülsbachtal bridge has been a listed building since 1985 .

Future use

The interest group Westerwald-Querbahn (IWQ) e. V. leased the Westerburg – Rennerod line from DB Netz AG in August 2013 and is aiming to repair the line across the Hülsbachtal bridge so that it can be used as a tourist railway .
