Huseyin Velioğlu

Hüseyin Velioğlu (* 1952 in Gercüş ; † January 17, 2000 in Beykoz ) was one of the leaders of the Turkish or Kurdish Hezbollah , a religious extremist organization that committed numerous murders in the early 1990s. Velioğlu led one of the hostile wings of this organization. He was killed in a police operation on January 17, 2000 in Beykoz.

Life

Hüseyin Velioğlu was of Kurdish origin. He was born as Hüseyin Durmaz in Batman Province and attended Devrim İlkokulu Elementary School in Batman. He also attended middle school and high school there. However, he graduated in Mardin. In 1978 he had his last name changed. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara University .

In 1978 Velioğlu brought out an English-language monthly magazine called "The Ummah" under its old name.

In 1980 he went to Diyarbakır and was one of the founders of the Turkish Hezbollah in 1987. When it came to rifts within the organization, Velioğlu was part of the leader of the so-called İlim wing. This wing insisted on armed struggle to achieve its goal of overthrowing the government and installing an Islamic regime. The militant wing also had the upper hand within the organization. After kidnapping business people in Istanbul, the Turkish police stormed an apartment in Beykoz / Istanbul. The operation, which lasted several hours, was filmed and broadcast. Velioğlu was killed in the process.
