geography
The Hātea River rises north of Kamo , a district of Whangarei , flows through the city in a southerly direction and flows south of Whangarei into Whāngārei Harbor . In the Tikipunga district are the Whangarei Falls , where the river plunges 26.3 meters above basalt rocks .
The river widens south of the inner-city bridges ( Victoria Bridge and Canopy Bridge ) and is used there as a marina and further downstream as a seaport.
