Hải Hưng

Coordinates: 20 ° 56 ′  N , 106 ° 19 ′  E Hải Hưng was a Vietnamese province ( tỉnh ), which existed from January 26, 1968 to November 6, 1996. It was created by merging the provinces of Hải Dương and Hưng Yên , both of which are located in the Red River Delta southeast of Hanoi .

From 1977 to 1979 the subordinate districts (huyện) were also merged, resulting in the following structure:

  • Hải Dương (provincial capital, independent)
  • Hưng Yên (independent city)
  • Chi Linh
  • Kim Môn (originated from Kim Thành and Kinh Môn)
  • Nam Thanh (originated from Nam Sách and Thanh Hà)
  • Cẩm Bình (originated from Cẩm Giàng and Bình Giang)
  • Tứ Lộc (originated from Tứ Kỳ and Gia Lộc)
  • Ninh Thanh (originated from Thanh Miện and Ninh Giang)
  • Mỹ Văn (originated from Văn Yên (again originated from Văn Giang and Yên Mỹ) and Văn Mỹ (again originated from Văn Lâm and Mỹ Hào))
  • Châu Giang (originated from Khoái Châu and 14 communities of Văn Giang)
  • Kim Thi (originated from Kim Động and Ân Thi)
  • Phù Tiên (originated from Tiên Lữ and Phù Cừ)

The united province had an area of ​​2,550 km². The population in 1993 was 2.664 million.

In November 1996 it was decided to reverse the merger. All mergers at the district level were also reversed, which was completed by July 1999.
