George Lytle Beam (born May 18, 1868 in New Paris, Ohio , † March 16, 1935 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American photographer who photographed landscapes and people in the western United States at the beginning of the 20th century.

Life

George Lytle Beam was born on May 18, 1868 in New Paris, Ohio . At the age of 5 he moved with his family to Lawrence, Kansas , where he went to school. At the age of 21 he established himself as a stamp dealer. Around 1890, after the death of his mother and two siblings, he moved to Denver , Colorado with his father . He worked as a stenographer for Chain-Hardy & Co., a stationery and bookseller in Denver. He soon moved to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad , where he worked as a stenographer for the chief warehouse clerk and buyer. In 1893 he was a freelance photographer for a short time. In 1894 he returned to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad as secretary for the passenger and ticket agent Shadrach K. Hooper. He was a skilled photographer and began shooting for the company. The first photos date from 1898 and by 1905 he had established himself as the company photographer. In addition to photos for advertising, events and inventory recording, many photos of landscapes and rail travelers were taken. The result was a unique collection of several thousand photographs showing people and landscapes in the western United States. On June 7, 1930, he married Fay L. Kuellmer in Colorado Springs . He died on March 16, 1935 in Denver, Colorado.
