Hải Dương is a town in the province of Hai Duong in Vietnam . The city is part of the metropolitan area of Hanoi and is divided into two parts by the Red River . In the 2009 census, the population of the city center was 170,420 (1999 census: 111,686). The district-free city of Hải Dương had a population of 213,096 in 2009. The city forms the capital of the Hải Dương Province. The city is divided into 21 wards and municipalities and has the status of a provincial city of the 1st class. It has had town charter since 1997.

history

In feudal times, Hải Dương referred to a wide area from east of Hanoi to the sea. The name was first mentioned in 1498. This area corresponds to all of modern Hải Dương, Hải Phòng , most of Hưng Yên and the southwest corner of Quảng Ninh . The city of Hải Dương was built in 1804 and was initially called "Thành Đông" (Chinese-Vietnamese for eastern citadel), which referred to a citadel east of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi. Before 1968, Hải Dương was the capital of Hải Dương Province. It was the capital of Hải Hảng Province between 1968 and 1996 after the H Provi Dương and Hưng Yên provinces merged to form Hải Hưng. On November 6, 1996, after the separation of the provinces of Hải Dương and Hưng Yên, Hải Dương became the capital of the province of H Provinzi Dương as before. On August 6, 1997, Hải Dương was granted city rights.

economy

The city lies between the industrial cities of Hải Phong and Hanoi and is therefore relatively industrialized. A railway line connects it with the two larger cities. It is also a market center for a rich rice growing area; The area also are litchi , watermelon , jute , rush , potatoes and tomatoes grown.
