The HEMS Academy (HEMS = Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) is an internationally oriented, integrated training center for helicopter pilots, emergency doctors and paramedics in the air rescue service , also known as HEMS Technical Crew Member . The facility, which is not far from the Bonn / Hangelar airfield , consists of a simulator hall with two full-flight flight simulators of the types EC135 and EC145 ; the standard helicopters used in air rescue. Two helicopter replicas (mock-ups) of the types EC135 and BK117, as well as a simulated hospital emergency room and a clinical shock room are used for training and further education of the medical crews. Additional training and briefing rooms complete the academy.

Conception

What is unique in the world is that in what is currently the most modern training facility, not only helicopter pilots flying on a rescue helicopter, but also emergency doctors and paramedics for ground rescue can be trained together comprehensively and according to international standards. In the HEMS Academy, the transport route from the scene of the accident via the transfer in a helicopter to the emergency room of a hospital can be simulated as a stress scenario like in reality and trained together with rescue workers. The interaction with the control center staff and thus the optimization of the interfaces can also be practiced.

Operator and user

The groundbreaking ceremony for the HEMS Academy took place on August 18, 2008; in June 2009 the new building was put into service for extensive tests. The first simulator system was approved by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt in March 2010, the second in September 2011. The system is operated by the commercial ADAC subsidiary ADAC HEMS Academy GmbH . Nationwide, the ADAC employs around 150 pilots within the Air Rescue Strategic Business Unit via the non-profit ADAC-Luftrettung GmbH , the commercial companies ADAC Luftfahrt Technik GmbH (ALT) , and ADAC Flugbetrieb GmbH . Since the beginning of 2010, they have completed their training, courses and further education in the training center in Hangelar. Medical training has been carried out since June 2009. According to their information, the costs for the HEMS Academy amounted to EUR 12.5 million.

The 50 rescue transport helicopters and intensive care transport helicopters of the ADAC air rescue are stationed nationwide. The closest operational aircraft is the RTH "Christoph Rheinland". He flies his missions - together with "Christoph 3", a helicopter of the Federal Police - from Cologne / Bonn Airport . Up to now, such training courses had to take place on real helicopters and with real equipment at Siegerland Airport . Increased environmental awareness, higher didactic requirements for trainers and training content , as well as significantly increased kerosene prices , all in all , ensured that ADAC is increasingly using flight simulators.

Technical Equipment

The two existing full-flight simulators for training on helicopters of the Eurocopter series (models EC 135 and EC 145 ) were manufactured by the British company CueSim. The large-scale arrangement of ten projectors makes it possible to realize a previously unknown dimension of the field of view for the pilots. This means that simulations can now be carried out whose real exercises could not have been flown for safety reasons. The simulators are recognized by various aviation authorities such as the Federal Aviation Office LBA , but also the ANAC in Brazil and Argentina or the Russian aviation authority.

Christoph Sim - a tool for patient simulation and the training of medical helicopter personnel in air rescue - is another module of the HEMS Academy. This simulates an EC 135 in wood construction. In addition, an authentically furnished shock room is available in which the handover of accident victims and patients can be realistically simulated. Similar to the simulator's cockpit, the trainer can use a console to import emergency situations depending on the training needs.

demand

The training courses are aimed at EC135 and EC145 helicopter pilots worldwide and, in addition to the usual type briefings, repetition training and proficiency tests, also offer tailor-made offers for all mission profiles (law enforcement, air rescue, VIP, offshore etc.) In addition to this aviation course offer Special courses for doctors and paramedics, as well as combined training units for all crew members, e.g. B. CRM courses offered. The demand was enormous even before the training center was commissioned, as such an integrated concept was implemented for the first time worldwide. Today professional helicopter operators from 29 nations use the training facilities of the ADAC HEMS Academy.
