The HMCS Victoria (SSK 876) is a conventional long-range hunting submarine of the Canadian Royal Canadian Navy and the lead ship of the Victoria class . It is designed for use in coastal areas, mainly for defense against enemy naval units and submarines. It was as HMS Unseen (S41) for the Submarine Service of the Royal Navy of Great Britain built and later adopted by Canada. The class has also been renamed, from Upholder - to Victoria class.

construction

The displacement of HMCS Victoria is approximately 2,185  t on the surface and approximately 2,400 t submerged. The sheath of the submarine is covered with anechoic tiles to revealing by active sonar (sound navigation Ranging, dt approximately:. Navigation and distance measurement by hydrophones ) to reduce. The boat is 70.3 m long, 7.6 m wide and has a diving depth of 200 m.

The pressure hull is constructed from high-strength steel sections and stiffened by circular internal frames. The tower, located approximately amidships, is used to accommodate the various antennas, periscopes and a closed command post that can accommodate five people.

Specifications

The HMCS Victoria has six torpedo tubes and can be up to eighteen Mark-48 heavyweight torpedoes wear for use against surface and underwater targets. It can also pick up and fire Harpoon missiles and lay sea mines .

The Victoria's sonar enables her to “passively” track and track other submarines and ships, that is, without using active sonar and thus revealing her position. It has radar ( radio detection and ranging ) for general navigation, attack and search periscopes with video recording and thermal imaging capabilities, and electronic support measures. The boat has two diesel generators , both of which can produce up to 1,500 kW , and a main engine. The generators are used to charge the two main batteries , which each consist of 240 battery cells. These batteries are used to power the boat, which can reach speeds of up to 20 knots underwater .

literature

Patrick Robinson had the boat - in the truest sense of the word - "appear" in two of his novels , albeit under the old name Unseen . Once it is used to simulate a journey that is considered impossible, namely to cross the Bosphorus undetected under water, since it is assumed that a terrorist did this with a Russian submarine. Two volumes later this same terrorist pirates the Unseen to her to a boat with anti-aircraft rebuild and thus strikes against the Western Civil Aviation perform. At the end of this book the Unseen will be sunk. In the novels, however, the Unseen is in English and later in Brazilian possession.
