HMS Astraea

Several warships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Astraea after Astraea , a figure in Greek mythology .

  • HMS Astraea (1781) was a fifth class warship frigate with 32 guns, which was launched in 1781 and lost in 1808 due to shipwreck at Anegada in the Caribbean .
  • HMS Astraea (1810) was a fifth class warship frigate with 36 guns, launched in 1810 and scrapped in 1851.
  • HMS Astraea (1893) was an armored cruiser with 4,360 tons, which was launched in 1893, gave its name to the Astraea class and was sold for scrapping in 1920. During the First World War , she fired the first British shots of this conflict in the bombing of Dar es Salaam ( Tanzania ) on August 8, 1914; later she was involved in the hunt for the German cruiser SMS Königsberg .
