HMS Cossack

Seven ships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Cossack after the Cossacks :

  • The first HMS Cossack was a sloop or brig with 22 guns that was launched in 1806, excelled in an attack on Santander in 1808 and was scrapped in 1816.
  • The second HMS Cossack was a gunboat that was commissioned in 1848 but not completed.
  • The third HMS Cossack was a screw-propelled corvette and 20 or 21 guns. Its construction had started under the name Vityas at a British shipyard for Russia , but the ship was confiscated after the outbreak of the Crimean War , put into service by the Royal Navy in 1854, used in the Crimean War and retired in 1875.
  • The fourth HMS Cossack was a third class cruiser launched in 1886, stationed primarily in East Africa , and sold for scrapping in 1905.
  • The fifth HMS Cossack was a first Tribal class torpedo boat destroyer launched in 1907 and sold for scrapping in 1919.
  • The sixth HMS Cossack (F03) was a destroyer of a new Tribal class , launched in 1936 and used in World War II and the like. a. through the Altmark incident , the fighting for Narvik and their participation in the hunt for the Bismarck . She sank after a torpedo hit by U 563 on October 27, 1941 west of Gibraltar with 159 men of her crew.
  • The seventh HMS Cossack (D57) was also a destroyer. It was launched in 1944, came u. a. used in the Korean War and was decommissioned in 1959.
