HMS Erebus
The following ships of the Royal Navy were previously called HMS Erebus . They were named after Erebos , the Greek god of Hades .
- The first HMS Erebus was a Brander launched in 1807 . In the following years the ship was rebuilt several times, including a. to a rocket ship , and was equipped with 18 to 24 cannons. It was sold in 1819.
- The second HMS Erebus was a 14-gun bombarde launched in 1826. Together with the HMS Terror , she was involved in the expedition to Antarctica , which James Clark Ross carried out from 1839 to 1843 . Both ships were converted to steam propulsion in 1844 and took part in the Arctic expedition under John Franklin from 1845 . In 1848 they were abandoned, surrounded by pack ice near King William Island .
- The third HMS Erebus was launched in 1856 and was a floating battery . It was sold in 1884
- The fourth HMS Erebus was launched in 1864 as the HMS Invincible . The ship belonged to the Audacious class and was named HMS Erebus in 1904 . After another renaming to HMS Fisgard II in 1906, the ship sank on September 17, 1914.
- The fifth HMS Erebus was a monitor and type ship of the Erebus class named after him . The ship was launched in 1916 and was scrapped in 1947.
