HMS Exeter

HMS Exeter was the name of five Royal Navy ships so far , named after the English city of Exeter .

  • The first HMS Exeter was a 3rd rank ship with 70 guns . After 1691, after an explosion in Plymouth, it was only used as a Hulk and then scrapped in 1717.
  • The second HMS Exeter was a 4th rank ship with 60 guns. Built in 1697, rebuilt between 1740 and 1744, it was in service until 1763.
  • The third HMS Exeter was a three-master with 64 guns. She was burned on February 12, 1784 after being declared unseaworthy.
  • The fourth HMS Exeter , a York-class heavy cruiser , entered service in 1929. He sank in the Battle of the Java Sea in 1942 .
  • The fifth HMS Exeter was a destroyer of Sheffield class , which in 1979 was launched and was decommissioned in 2009.
