HMS Pandora

HMS Pandora was the name of several ships in the history of the British Royal Navy .

  • The first HMS Pandora was a Porcupine- class frigate with 24 guns, launched in 1779. The ship was looking for the Bounty in 1791 and stranded on the Great Barrier Reef .
  • The second HMS Pandora was a brig with 14 guns. The originally French ship, named Pandour , was captured by the Royal Navy in 1795.
  • The third HMS Pandora was an 18-gun Cruizer- class brig . It was launched in 1806 and destroyed in 1811.
  • The fourth HMS Pandora was also a Cruizer- class brig , launched in 1813. It was sold in 1831.
  • The fifth HMS Pandora was a three-gun brig. Launched in 1833, the ship was used for coastal protection from 1857 and sold in 1862.
  • The sixth HMS Pandora was a steam powered gunboat made of wood that was launched in 1859. The ship was sold in 1875 and again in 1878 and renamed the USS Jeanette . It made several trips to the Arctic . There it was frozen in the ice in 1881 and sank.
  • The seventh HMS Pandora was a cruiser of the Pearl class and ran 1889 from the pile. A year later it was named Katoomba and was sold in 1906.
  • The eighth HMS Pandora was a Pelorus- class cruiser . Launched in 1900, the ship was scrapped in 1913.
  • The ninth HMS Pandora was a depot ship . The merchant ship, called Seti , was purchased in 1914 and renamed Dolphin in 1924 . In 1939 it ran into a mine and sank.
  • The tenth HMS Pandora was a submarine of the Parthian class . Launched in 1929, the boat sank in Valletta in 1942 , was lifted the following year and scrapped in 1957.
