HMS Renown was a 50-gun fourth rank ship of the line of the British Royal Navy . The ship was launched in 1774 and scrapped in 1794.

The Renown served in American waters during the American Revolutionary War . She became known because on August 13, 1778 she attacked the 90-gun ship of the line Languedoc , flagship of the French admiral Charles Henri d'Estaing , which had been dismasted the previous day by a heavy storm , near Newport (Rhode Island) and from behind shot at. The Languedoc was only saved by the surprise appearance of a French squadron under Admiral Pierre André de Suffren . Admiral d'Estaing had planned an attack on Newport, but his fleet had been so badly damaged by the storm that he had to refrain and instead sail to Boston for repairs.
