HMS Severn

Ten warships of the British Royal Navy were or are named HMS Severn after the River Severn in Wales .

  • The first HMS Severn was a fourth class warship ( ship of the line ) with two decks and 50 cannons, launched in 1695 and scrapped in 1734.
  • The second HMS Severn was also a fourth class warship with two decks, 50 guns, launched in 1739 and fell into the hands of the French in 1746. The Royal Navy recaptured the ship in 1747, but no longer put it into service.
  • The third HMS Severn was again a fourth class warship with two decks, 50 guns, launched in 1747 and sold in 1759.
  • The fourth HMS Severn was classified as a warship fifth class frigate of the Adventure class with 44 guns, which was used as a troop transport. It was launched in 1786 and was stranded in Grouville Bay, Jersey in 1804 .
  • A 38-gun frigate classified as a fifth class warship was to be called HMS Severn , but was renamed HMS Tagus before it was launched in 1813 .
  • The fifth, HMS Severn, was a fourth class warship, an Endymion- class 40-gun frigate launched in 1813 and sold in 1825. She took u. a. In 1816 participated in the bombardment of Algiers.
  • A warship classified as a fifth class 46 gun frigate, which was to be named HMS Severn , was commissioned in 1825, but not built.
  • The sixth HMS Severn was a fourth class warship rated frigate with 50 guns and 2,767 tons. It was launched in 1856 as one of the last sailing frigates in the Royal Navy. In 1860 it received a screw drive, in 1876 it was decommissioned.
  • The seventh HMS Severn was a protected cruiser of the Mersey class with 4,050 tons. It was launched in 1885 and was decommissioned after 1900.
  • The eighth HMS Severn was a monitor of the Humber class but, purchased, which was originally built for Brazil in 1914 for the Royal Navy in World War I used and was sold in 1921 for breaking up.
  • The ninth HMS Severn (N57) was a submarine of the Thames class . It was launched in 1934, was used in World War II and was scrapped in 1946.
  • The tenth and currently standing in the service of HMS Severn (P282) is a patrol boat of the River Class , which was launched of 2002.
