The Hochwaldbahn Verkehrsgesellschaft ( HWB Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH ) was a railway company (EVU) from Hermeskeil in the Hunsrück, which was active in the national freight and passenger transport. HWB Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH was also a co-owner of the Sächsisch-Böhmische Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH (SBE), which was dissolved at the end of 2010 and which until then had operated public rail passenger transport in Saxony and the Czech Republic. The company was primarily active in rail freight transport across Germany. In addition, there were construction train services and tourist trips with rail buses on the Hunsrückquerbahn under the name "Saar-Hunsrück Express". In 2012 the company had to file for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties.

Saar-Hunsrück Express

This tourist railway operated from 2009 to 2013 on the Hunsrückquerbahn in the now disused section between Morbach and Büchenbeuren, as well as on a section of the former Hochwaldbahn . The offer was used by a total of 40,000 passengers during this period. The Saar-Hunsrück Express, now operated by Heinrichsmeyer Eisenbahndienstleistungen UG , continues to offer charter trips.

Infrastructure

HWB Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH belonged to the HWB Hochwaldbahn Group , which also includes the railway infrastructure company HEB Hunsrück Eisenbahninfrastructure GmbH , which operated the following routes until they were returned to DB Netz at the end of December 2014 :

  • Section Hermeskeil - Morbach - Büchenbeuren of the Hunsrückquerbahn Langenlonsheim - Hermeskeil:
    • The disused section from Hermeskeil to Morbach was leased by DB Netz in August 2008 and operated as a construction track until it was closed in December 2009;
    • The section from Morbach to Büchenbeuren to the east was also leased by DB Netz in August 2008 and operated as a public railway infrastructure since April 2009. The operational closure took place on December 31, 2013 and the shutdown on October 17, 2014.
  • The 23-kilometer-long Hermeskeil - Türkismühle railway line was leased by the Hunsrückbahn eV association in October 2003 as a remnant of the Hochwaldbahn, which once gave the company its name, and operated without interruption until it was handed over to the HEB on August 31, 2012. It was shut down on October 17, 2014.
