Haşmet Akal

Haşmet Akal (* 1918 in Istanbul , † 1960 in Ankara ) was a Turkish painter and university professor.

Akal studied painting at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts , among others with Leopold Levy. He received his diploma in 1940. The graduates then founded the Yeniler Grubu ("new group").

In 1943 the Turkish state sent him to Paris on a scholarship, where he worked with painters André Lhote and Fernand Léger , among others . During this time he assisted the painter Jean Metzinger . In Valenciennes in northern France he won a competition and was commissioned to paint the interior of a church. In 1953 he returned to Turkey. Numerous exhibitions followed; In 1956 he accepted a position as an art professor at the University of Mersin .
