Habib Achour

Habib Achour (born February 25, 1913 in El Abbassia ( Kerkenna Islands ), † March 14, 1999 there ) was a Tunisian trade unionist. As Vice President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions , from 1934 he was one of the first supporters of Habib Bourguiba , who led the country to independence in 1956. In 1946 Achour was one of the founding members of the Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT). He was arrested and imprisoned several times, both before independence and afterwards, when he defied Habib Bourguiba's claims to power. He was chairman of the UGTT three times: from 1963 to 1965, then from 1970 to 1978 and from 1984 to 1989.
