Hack is a rogue-like computer game . It was developed in 1982 by Jay Fenlason with the support of Kenny Woodland, Mike Thome and Jon Payne, then students at the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury . It was first published on December 17, 1984 on Usenet in the net.sources newsgroup, after it had been significantly further developed by Andries Brouwer . Brouwer continued development until July 1985 and then Don Kneller, who ported it to MS-DOS.

Hack is based on the 1980 computer game Rogue , from which numerous elements were adopted, including the goal of the game to recover the "Amulet of Yendor" from a dungeon that is several levels deep . Compared to his role model, Hack introduces various character classes , animals and shops as additional game elements and also expands the list of monsters, objects and spells.

On July 23, 1985 the final version 1.0.3 was published. Hack is the predecessor of the rogue-like game NetHack, which has been further developed to this day .

Typical game round in Hack

As with Rogue , the game world is displayed using ASCII characters: Rooms are represented by lines and dots, corridors by hash  signs (#) and doors by a plus sign (+). An @ shows the current position of the game figure ( player character ). Their other game statistics, including about the life energy ( Hp , for English. Hit points , dt .: hit points ) are always displayed at the bottom of the screen. The character is controlled by means of keyboard inputs.

Du hörst Geräusche in der Ferne.
