The Port of Tacoma (Engl. Port of Tacoma ) is a large sea port in Tacoma in the US state of Washington .

The vast majority of the port is used for cargo handling. It is one of over 70 seaports in the state. The port operator is the Tacoma City Council, represented by the Port of Tacoma Commission .

history

The story goes back to November 5, 1918, when the natural harbor in Commencement Bay was structurally fortified; the first ship ( Edmore ) came in in 1921.

location

The tidal port is located in the northern part of the city of Tacoma in Pierce County in the Pacific Northwest . Access to and from the Pacific Ocean is via the Puget Sound ; there in the south of the sound is the harbor.

The port facilities have an area of ​​972 hectares , the following jetties exist:

Economic performance

Every year between 9 and 13 million tons of freight are handled. Over 70% of the unloaded imported goods are transported by rail, mostly in containers , to the markets east of the state.
