Detention hospital

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A detention hospital is a hospital that treats people in prison . They are often in close proximity to and / or part of penal institutions.

Situation in Germany

In Germany the medical standards in detention hospitals are the same as in normal hospitals. The significant difference lies in the high level of protection provided by walls, fences and barbed wire, as well as the constant presence of prison officers .

Legally, detention hospitals in Germany are not companies within the meaning of the Hospital Financing Act (KHG).

Situation in the GDR

In the GDR , detention hospitals were used to a large extent for the treatment of enemies of the state and political prisoners . B. had sustained gunshot wounds or the like in an unsuccessful escape at the border .

In the prison hospital in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen , which is now a memorial , a total of 2,694 prisoners received medical care from 1959 to 1989, 377 of them several times. The location of the detention hospital was kept secret from the inmates and the public. According to an inventory book in the Berlin State Archives , the last prisoner was released on August 10, 1990 at 12.15 p.m. The treating staff consisted of Stasi employees.

The medical standard was very low, some of the prisoners were not treated at all, and sexual assaults also took place. Some of the interrogations took place at the bedside.

Since there was a lot of incorrect treatment in the prison hospitals in the GDR, it can be assumed that this happened due to the inadequate level of training of the staff. Alternatively, there is the theory that the Ministry for State Security has carried out incorrect medical treatments in some cases in a targeted manner. However, this has not yet been verifiable because there is no money for a processing and relatively few documents from the Central Medical Service of the GDR have been prepared for research.
