Hail insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A hail insurance is an insurance against agricultural hail damage . Damage caused by hail to motor vehicles is covered by partial comprehensive insurance , and damage to glass caused by hail is covered by building insurance . It is a private, voluntary individual insurance . Hail insurance is offered by various providers.

Subject of insurance

Agricultural and horticultural products such as field crops, wine, fruit or vegetables are insured against damage caused by hail. The insurance pays for the reduction in the harvest caused by the hailstorm. This must be determined by an expert opinion , as the amount of the harvest depends on a number of factors. Since the amount of damage is only determined at the end of the insurance period, Section 92 (2) VVG in Germany regulates that the insurer can only terminate after a damage at the end of the insurance period.

history

Hail insurance has been offered in Germany since the second half of the 18th century. Germany is the first country to offer such insurance.

In 1901 there were 41 hail insurance policies. In Bavaria there was a special feature that there was a public monopoly (the Bavarian State Shale Insurance Company ). In the rest of the empire there were 5 joint stock companies and 35 mutual insurance associations.

In the Insurance Contract Act of 1908, Sections 108 to 115 regulated hail insurance.

The amount of hail damage is not evenly distributed over the years. Statistically, series of several years with above-average damage and other years with below-average damage are the rule. It is therefore essential that insurance companies can build reserves to withstand a series of years of high loss amounts. This was especially difficult after the inflation of 1923 , when reserves were lost.

During the Nazi era , the hail insurers restricted competition in the Jena Agreement on October 1, 1938.

In 1950 there were 29 hail insurance policies. 7 of them were public broadcasters. There were also 4 stock corporations and 18 mutual insurance associations.

Association

The Association of Property Insurers is responsible for the insurance line of hail insurance.
