The hornbeam leafminer ( Phyllonorycter esper ella ) is a butterfly from the family of moths (Gracillariidae).

features

The moths of the hornbeam leaf miner count among the small butterflies and reach a size of 7–9 mm. The front wings of the moth have a white-brown striped pattern.

distribution

The hornbeam leaf miner is found in the western Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. It occurs in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. In the north, their occurrence extends to northern England and southern Sweden. The species is absent on the Iberian Peninsula .

Way of life

The species forms two generations per year. The moths are usually observed in May and in late summer from August. Host plants moth form hornbeam ( Carpinus ) and hornbeam ( Ostrya ), particularly the (Common) hornbeam ( Carpinus betulus ). The hornbeam leaf miner belongs to a smaller group of leaf miner species whose caterpillars develop in a space mine on the top of the leaves of their host plants. The silvery-white shiny lead is initially round, later it becomes oval-shaped. Finally, the lead causes the sheet to fold over them. At first the caterpillar has no legs. It becomes about 5 mm long. Eventually it pupates in the mine. The species overwinters as a pupa.
