Hajia Alima Mahama

Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama (born November 17, 1957 , Walewale, Northern Region ) is a lawyer and was Minister for Women and Children in Ghana from January 2005 to January 2009 under President John Agyekum Kufuor .

education

Mahama first attended whale whale elementary school and later went to whale whale and Nalerugu Local Authority Middle School. She then attended the St. Francis Girls Secondary School in Jirapa, where she also received the GCE Ordinary Level Certificate in 1975. After this graduation Mahama moved to Cape Coast to the Wesley Girls High School and successfully completed it with the GCE Advanced Level Certificate in 1977.

Mahama attended the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra , and did a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Law and Sociology between 1977 and 1980. Immediately after graduation, she went to Accra at the Ghana Law School and became Barrister at Law in 1982 .

Between September 1985 and December 1986 Mahama studied at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague in the Netherlands and graduated here with a Master of Arts in Development Studies with a specialization in Regional Development Planning ) from. Back in Ghana, she obtained a Certificate in Public Administration from GIMPA, in Accra, Ghana in 1987 and in 1991 the Certificate Women in Development from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ottawa, Canada. At the University of Ottawa, Mahama attended a postgraduate program in Development Administration and Management between August 1990 and September 1991.

In Urban Planning and Women Studies , Mahama participated in a postgraduate program at the University of New Jersey in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship program between August 1999 and July 2000.

Career

Hajia Alima Mahama worked part-time in the Rural Women's Credit Organization as a research co-ordinator in the CUSO WID project. From August 1993 to April 1996 she worked part-time as ( training facilitator ) in the Council of Christians in the Ghana Ecumenical Training and Consultancy Center.

From 1996 to 2000 she was chairman of the NGO Maalizali, which deals in particular with advising local government institutions as well as gender analysis planning and training. Between May 1987 and April 2001 Mahama was Senior Planner and Gender Development Co-ordinator in the Northern Regional rural Integrated Program .

Between May 2001 and April 2003, Hajia Alimah Mahamah was Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration. Between May 2003 and January 6, 2005, she was Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry and Special Initiatives of the President (now Ministry of Trade and Industry).

From January 2005 to January 2009 she was Gladys Asmah's successor in the Ministry of Women's and Children's Affairs. She holds the seat in parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the constituency of Nalerigu in the Northern Region .

Hajia Alima Mahama is unmarried and has one child.
