The hook skewer is a skewer with an elongated blade that has a large, strongly curved blade hook on one side. This serves to grasp the opponent, to draw closer, to injure, to throw off balance or to knock down. The hook is also used to pull down shields in order to hinder the opponent and take away his cover.
The hook spike was only an intermediate development that emerged in the 14th century and was replaced by the glaive around the 16th century .
